Every time they say or ask me that I find myself saying "of course I love you" but I never tell them why and I don't think I ever thought of why I love working with kids so much. Now I'm beginning to understand why I love my job.
I love the way kids greet me. It's not with the typical "Hi, How are you?" It's more of a "I got brand new shoes" or "I get to see my cousins on Saturday!" They cut to the chase. I love how unrefined my kids are.
I love the way they interact with their parents. How they get so excited and jump up and down when they see their car pull into the lot and how they run up and give mom a hug or jump into dad's arms. It's pure affection and adulation. I love watching love in its most innocent and purest form: the love of a child.
I love the way my kids look when they realize something, be it that "oh no she caught me. I'm busted face" or the "did you just see what a nice thing I did face" or my favorite the "wow, I understand how that will make me a better person and I want to do better face". Their eyes say it all.
But mostly, I think I love my job because I don't just love kids, but because I love people. I love the power of the heart and soul and the strength of the mind. I love getting to know the young hearts and souls who I tie the shoelaces of, write the names of, set the lunches for, braid the hair of, and help build the lives of everyday.
I know my role in their lives may not be for very long or may not have made much of an impact but I do know that every child who I meet leaves an impact on me, just like every person I meet.
So I think that's why I love my job and why I love people. Because inside every person, no matter how old, is their passion, their love, and their minds.
I hope that if you are not in a job that fuels you that you will have the strength to move. I wish you courage and a passion-filled life and I hope that when you find what you love, people will ask you "why you love it", and you'll know why.
